Ngwala Willumbong provides
alcohol and drug rehabilitation services and outreach support programs for
Koorie Men, Women and Families.
Ngwala Willumbong Co-operative
Ltd has been a key service provider offering specialist alcohol and drug rehabilitation
and outreach support services to Aboriginal communities in Victoria since
1975.
Two full time Koorie Access Workers
(male and female) employed by Ngwala are located in the Koorie Unit established
by Ngwala Willumbong at Moreland Hall's 26 Jessie Street site.
The Moreland Hall Project is an
example of Ngwala developing strategic alliances and partnerships with specialist
alcohol and drug agencies to foster best practice in service delivery, research,
education and training.
The Project is aimed at increasing
access for Aboriginal people from the Northern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne
and selected Victorian prisons to the specialist drug and alcohol programs
available at Moreland Hall.
The aim of the program includes:
- Greater access and tailoring
of services for Aboriginal people with alcohol and drug problems
- Better access to information
for Aboriginal people in relation to alcohol and drug issues
- A remodeling of Moreland Hall
programs and services to make them culturally relevant
- The development and transfer
of skills between the staff and management
The Koorie Unit works in conjunction
with existing A&D positions of Moreland Hall and improves access to Moreland
Hall programs by providing 'cultural brokers' to support and accompany Aboriginal
people through all stages of the treatment process.
